Barcelona, 4" Ebonised

Description

Long and sleek - these are the characteristics of the Barcelona chess pieces. A well thought-through design indeed. The pieces have a wide base socket from which their long neck extends to carry the heads of the pieces. This design features make them very stable on the board, especially since most of the weight is concentrated towards the bottom of the pieces.

As is so often the case with chess pieces, the knight wants to be the centre of attention - and rightly so with its beautifully crafted head. If you look closely, you will even find that the teeth have been carefully crafted. And the rook doesn't have to hide either with its outwards leaning battlements. A nice variation from the typical straight designs.

All pieces are weighted and are felted to protect both themselves and the board from scratches. It goes without saying that the pieces are handcrafted and -polished to a very high finish. Both the kings weigh approximately 59g which is no surprise as both are made of the same wood. They both stand 4" (100mm) tall and we recommend a board with 55mm / 2.1in squares for best looks. White pieces are made from boxwood whereas the black ones are made from ebonised boxwood. This gives them an appearance close to real ebony but you will be pleased to know that they cost only a fraction from a real ebony set.
